Exquisite exhibition at Amsterdam Whitney, New York City 2009

Wassily Kandinsky once said that “a parallel between color and music can only be relative – just as a violin can give warm shades of tone, so yellow has shades, which can be expressed by various instruments.” Alike, Contemporary painter Ton Boudewijn follows the tradition of Abstract Expressionism with his moving oeuvre of exquisite, musical paintings.

Above all, Mr. Boudewijn utilizes rich colors and dynamic forms as synesthetic means to connect with the viewer emotionally and intellectually, similar to Kandinsky who would hear harmonic intonations as he painted. Mr. Boudewijn, a classical guitar player, paints in a lyrical manner, demonstrated partially by the broad sweeping brushstrokes of voluptuous circular forms that convey a sense of soothing, billowing movement within the composition of the work. Mr. Boudewijn’s expressive use of sumptuous colors, such as resonant gold and sonorous royal blue channel pure feeling to the spectator. There is an exquisite harmony between color and texture, such as smooth, bold brushstrokes of bronze juxtaposed with diaphanous clusters of ivory paint, which appears like giant flower puffs rolling across a sizzling desert. Mr. Boudewijn’s canvases are like windows to a sphere where the emotive manifests into tactile forms, so that the spectator may deeper explore their own soul.
